    I Never Had a Plan B. Here's What That Actually Cost Me.

    Growing up restless in a small northern Canadian town, I didn't know the word for what I was. I just knew I couldn't stop — and that staying would have cost more than leaving ever did.

    There was an atlas on my bedroom shelf held together with masking tape. By the time I was twelve I'd traced every highway out of our town so many times with my finger that the ink had worn pale in places. I didn't think that was strange. Maybe it was. Nobody said anything.

    I grew up in a small town in northern Canada where the winters were long and the options, as far as I could tell, were: stay and settle, or leave and risk everything. Some people call that a hard choice. I never experienced it that way. For me, the only risk was in staying quiet.

    Music wasn't something I studied or discovered in a classroom. It was something I survived into — quietly, stubbornly, over years of riding horses in the kind of silence that teaches you things about yourself you weren't looking to learn. There was a voice in me that kept insisting. I got tired of arguing with it.

    What leaving actually looked like

    I hit the road young. No label. No manager. No safety net stitched together from family money or a fallback career. Just a voice I was still figuring out, a truck that needed work, and a stubbornness that probably looked like confidence from the outside. It wasn't. It was just the absence of any acceptable alternative.

    People romanticize this part. I'm not going to do that to you. There were years the road cost more than it gave back — financially, physically, in the particular loneliness that comes from being the only woman on a lineup of six acts who all knew each other and none of them knew what to make of you. There were nights I played to three farmers and a bartender on a stage made of plywood over a drain, and drove four hours home after because I couldn't afford to stay.

    I went anyway. Every time. Not because I was fearless — fear was always there, riding shotgun — but because fear stopped being a reason to stop. It just became part of the weather.

    What the small towns gave me back

    Here's what nobody tells you about playing the rooms where you can't hide: you get honest fast. There's no sound board to blame, no lighting rig to lean on. It's just you and whatever you actually have. Those rooms shaped my voice more than any studio ever will.

    Coast to coast. Back-road villages. Cities where I knew no one. I built something town by town, show by show — not a career in the traditional sense, not yet, but a sound. A perspective. A way of writing that could only come from actually living the way I was living, not performing a version of it.

    The debut EP Northern Willow carries all of it. Country blues, roots rock, and soul with a 70s backbone. People hear it and say it sounds reminiscent of many things, and like nothing in their playlist right now. That's the point. I wasn't trying to fit a format. The format finds the song, not the other way around.

    On not having a plan B

    People ask me about this more than anything else. Usually what they're really asking is: weren't you scared? Or sometimes: weren't you being irresponsible? Both are fair questions. The answer to the first one is yes, always. The answer to the second one depends on what you think responsibility means.

    I think responsibility means knowing what you're made of and not pretending otherwise. Staying in a life that didn't fit me to avoid the discomfort of one that might — that would have been the real irresponsibility. The plan B wasn't a safety net. It was a slow erasure.

    So no. There was never a plan B. There still isn't. And I don't say that to be inspiring — I say it because it's true, and because I think there are people reading this who already know exactly what I mean and are waiting for someone to say it plainly.

    Why I'm writing this down now

    The new single "Country Boots" came from one of those nights where something shifts on a dance floor and you realize everyone in the room needed this exact song at exactly this moment. That feeling — that specific electricity — is still the whole reason I do this. Not the streams, not the metrics, not the algorithm. That.

    I'm writing this down because I'm at a point in this where I want to be in conversation with the people who find their way to this music. Not just give you songs and disappear. The Journal is where that happens — honest writing about what this life actually looks like, how the songs get made, what the road costs and what it pays back.

    If you grew up restless somewhere cold and mapped highways in your head and couldn't shake the feeling that there was somewhere else you were supposed to be — you found the right place.

    Pull up a chair. This is going to be a long, good road.
